August 2025 - A Conversation over a pint of Korev
It was another beautiful Cornish day in August of 2025 when three friends briefly sat down at Cakebread's in Gorran Haven to enjoy a pint of Korev. As we sat, chewing the cud, watching people come and go, one of these friends who has family in the village made a simple but profound observation:
"Can you imagin what it would be like without these toilets?"
He went on to explain how Cornwall Council made the decision to close a large number of public toilets across the county, devolving management to local communities back in 2016, and how this local community & St. Gorran Parish Council had stepped up to save these essential facilities.
Why Gorran Haven Matters to Us
Gorran Haven isn't just any coastal village to us, it's a place that holds decades of cherished memories:
- Deep roots - The family of one of these friends has been part of the community since the 1960s
- 1995 - Our first childhood memory of this special corner of Cornwall
- Since then - More holidays and visits, creating lasting memories
- Recent years - Religiously visiting with our own young families and creating lasting memories
Over nearly three decades, we've witnessed firsthand how important facilities like public facilities are to the well-being of a coastal Cornish community. They're not just conveniences, they're the infrastructure that makes places accessible and welcoming to everyone.
The Moment of Realization
As our friend shared the story of the 2016 crisis and how the community rallied to save their facilities, we realized something important: this wasn't just Gorran Haven's story. This was happening across Cornwall, with communities fighting to maintain essential services that had been taken for granted.
We saw families with young children, elderly visitors, and people with disabilities all benefiting from these community-maintained facilities. Without them, places like Gorran Haven would become less accessible, less welcoming, less viable for local businesses and ultimately less special.
The Driving Force Behind 4u2p.uk
That conversation over a pint of Korev was the catalyst for 4u2p.uk. We realized that if communities like Gorran Haven could successfully maintain these vital facilities, there might be a way to help other communities do the same.
Our Mission Was Born
We wanted to create a platform that could help communities across Cornwall maintain their essential facilities through modern fundraising tools, increased online exposure, simple donation mechanisms and increased on-premise visibility of how these facilities are managed & maintained.
A Personal Connection
This isn't just another website for us, it's deeply personal. Every family visit to Gorran Haven, every memory created there, reinforces why these community facilities in and around Cornwall matter so much.
We've seen our own children use these facilities, watched elderly relatives appreciate the accessibility, and witnessed how visitors from around the world benefit from the community's dedication to maintaining these essential services.
Looking Forward
Our friend's family have benefited from all that Gorran Haven has to offer since the 1960s. Our own connection dates back nearly thirty years. Now, we want to help ensure that future generations can enjoy these same benefits, not just in Gorran Haven, but in communities across Cornwall.
That conversation in August 2025 set us on a path to support the great people, the parish councils, community groups, and volunteers who keep these essential facilities running when others might give up.
This is Our Story
From a simple appreciation of what makes Gorran Haven special, to a platform supporting communities across Cornwall. 4u2p.uk represents our commitment to preserving the essential facilities that make Cornwall accessible and welcoming to everyone.
By highlighting the financial & time overheads of maintaining these facilities. Every donation made in person via donation boxes, via this platform, every time the facts are openly discussed, every community we help support, and every facility that stays open is a continuation of that conversation in Cakebreads. A recognition that such things are worthy of the extra time & effort, and that communities can achieve remarkable things when they work together.
